Generate or Reset Your TrafficCreator API Key
API keys are issued by our support team. There is no self-service button for this in the dashboard yet, so to get a key — or to have an existing one replaced — open a support ticket and ask .
How to Request a Key#
- Open Support Tickets in your dashboard and click New ticket.
- Set the category to General and the subject to something like "API key request".
- Say what you plan to build. This helps us confirm the API covers your use case before you start.
We issue the key on the ticket. Keys look like tgp_ followed by a long random string.
If Your Key Leaks#
Treat a leaked key like a leaked password — anyone holding it can act on your account through the API.
Open a ticket immediately and ask for rotation. Rotating issues a new key and invalidates the old one, so any integration still using the old key will start failing until you update it. Mention that it is urgent so it gets picked up quickly.
Keeping a Key Safe#
- Store it in an environment variable or a secrets manager, never hardcoded in source you might commit.
- Never put it in front-end code. Anything running in a browser is readable by the visitor, so a key used there is effectively public.
- Don't paste it into a shared document, screenshot, or chat. If you need to show us a failing request, redact the key first — we never need its value to help you.
- Use one key per integration where practical, so rotating one doesn't break everything at once.
Troubleshooting#
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| API requests return unauthorized | Confirm a key has actually been issued to your account — the dashboard has no key indicator, so ask on a ticket if you're unsure. |
| Requests worked yesterday, fail today | If your key was rotated, every integration using the old value must be updated. |
| Need a key rotated | Open a ticket. Rotation is immediate and breaks the old key, so schedule it alongside updating your integrations. |
